Aligning the Next Gen Math Standards to Algebra 1 Course Units


Next school year NYS is implementing the NextGen Algebra 1 Math Standards. Earlier this year I went to a training on the standards and recently my colleague and I sifted through the standards to put together our unit outlines for next year.


After all of this work with analyzing the standards I wanted to share with you an outline of units and corresponding standards (with brief standard notes) that align with the Algebra 1 course.


Highlighted standards are those that repeat in multiple units.


Unit 1: Pre-Algebra/Foundations for Algebra 1

AI-N.RN.3 - properties and operations of rational numbers

AI-A.REI.4 - simplifying radicals

AI-A.N.Q.1 - selecting appropriate units


Unit 2: Polynomials

AI-A.SSE.1a - polynomial vocabulary

AI-A.SSE.3 - rewrite equivalent expressions

AI-A.SSE.3c - properties of exponents

AI-A.APR.1 - operations with polynomials


Unit 3: Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities in 1-Variable

AI-A.SSE.1 - interpret expressions in context

AI-A.REI.1a - explain steps for solving equations

AI-A.REI.3 - solve equations an inequalities in 1-variable and literal

AI-A.CED.4 - rewrite formulas

AI-N.Q.3 - choose accuracy appropriate to limitations

AI-A.CED.1 - create equations and inequalities to represent context

AI-A.CED.3 - represent constraints and interpret viability in context


Unit 4: Functions

AI-F.BF.1 - write function to describe relationship between 2 quantities

AI-F.IF.1 - definition of function, domain, range, y = f(x)

AI-F.IF.2 - use function notation, evaluate functions, interpret in context

AI-F.IF.5 - determine appropriate domain


Unit 5: Systems of Equations - Algebraically

AI-A.CED.2 - create equations and inequalities to represent real-world context

AI-A.REI.6a - solve systems algebraically (elim. and sub.) and graphically

AI-A.REI.11 - f(x) = g(x) recognize as solution, interpret in context

Unit 6: Graphing Linear Equations and Inequalities **A1 Priority Unit**

Unit 11: Solving Quadratic Equations (Factor, QF, CTS)

AI-A.REI.1a - explain steps for solving equations

AI-A.REI.4 - Solve quadratics; simplifying radicals

AI-A.REI.4a - complete the square

AI-A.REI.4b - solve quadratics by inspection, square rooting, factoring, CTS, QF, graphing. Recognize when no real solutions exist.

AI-A.APR.3 - identify zeros when factorable

AI-A.REI.7a - Solve quad-lin systems algebraically and graphically

AI-F.IF.8 - write functions in equivalent forms to reveal key ideas

AI-F.IF.8a - use algebraic process to find key parts of quadratic


Unit 12: More Function Families

Unit 13: Sequences

AI-A.CED.1 - create equations and inequalities to represent context


Unit 14: Statistics

AI-S.ID.1 - dot plots, histograms, box plots

AI-S.ID.2 - select appropriate shape and spread of data

AI-S.ID.3 - compare differences in shape, center and spread

AI-S.ID.5 - summarize with two-way tables
